Chase the Sun (+ the Sins) - The Vanguard - Friday 25 July 2008

Sue and Stephe ventured out into a cold Winter's night to check out Chase the Sun, expecting fairly good things given what we'd heard on the Moshtix site, and on their MySpace page...

[Special thanks to John and Louise of the Vanguard for tickets, and a great table for the show!]

The first support (Tamlin) proved that stage presence and showmanship matter - his technique was undoubtedly excellent, and his voice seemed strong and potentially interesting, but pretty well no-one paid any attention to the set - and not surprisingly, given that it was not all that inspiring, I'm afraid...

The second support was The Sins who proved to be very entertaining, with a decent stage presence, and a good range of songs for the set from simple melodies to hard hitting blues thrash(although, Sue wasn't that excited by the 'heavier' numbers, despite the solid blues / rock heritage....).

Finally, Chase the Sun came on, and for some reason were turned up well beyond a comfortable sound level... Having not quite got around to ear plugs yet (note to self: if it's good enough for the band, it's good enough for me!), we had to bail after the first 20 minutes of the set... Which was pretty tragic, because if my ears weren't bleeding, I'm sure I'd have enjoyed the live versions of the all the material I'd heard before. Given that I recently stood in front of the speaker stack for Red Riders at The Annandale I reckon I'm a fair judge of loud, and far tooooo loud, and this was certainly the latter...

It was actually better at the back of the venue (outside the restaurant), but we were then in sufficient pain that we bailed anyway.

Sadly, a poor finish to a night with a lot of promise. Bugger.
