Kristy and Stephe managed to organise themselves at the last minute, and were joined by Ben around 11pm, but couldn't arrange any other takers at such short notice...
In any case, quick jaunt to the inner west, where we were recommended a dining venue by Jodie (away on her hen's weekend - which is a pretty good excuse for not joining us!) called Vicinis (sp?). In any case, a great little Italian joint on the corner of Nelson Road and ?, Annandale. Dinner was excellent, and we were ready to fire.
Supporting Vasco Era was The Fumes. We arrived a little way into their set, which was as high energy etc, as promised on the gig guide - perhaps just a little much over the top for mine - but clearly setting the tone of the evening as a more thrash metal than blues bias... Impressive drummer, which again was a harbinger of the things to come.
Despite Stephe playing a long section of the Fumes' set down the phone to Ben, he still decided to come along, and joined us in the break (!).
The gig guide for Vasco Era is worth quoting:

The Vasco Era are a band from a small town called Apollo Bay.
One of them is tall with short hair and a beard, one is short with long hair and a beard and the other one is short with spikey hair and no beard at all. There are two brothers in the band and most people think that the brothers are the two bearded ones but they are all confused because the brothers are actually the short one with spikey hair and no beard at all and the tall one with the short hair and the beard. Now I know some of you might be worried about the short one with the long hair and beard being left out but don't because he's always been friends with the brothers and they treat him just like another brother.
The Vasco Era almost earn enough money to pay rent, but the short one with long hair and a beard (the one that isn't one of the brothers) sometimes has to look after children at carlton gardens primary school to help get them money to live.
Sometimes when the band has a day off they play tennis together, they are not very good but you must always remember that sport is about trying your hardest and being active rather than being the best player.
The Vasco Era start recording their first album in september in a country called the united states of america. They are very exited but also very nervous because music critics can be mean to some bands if they don't like their music and it can make them sad.
The band's music is sometimes very loud (like when your dad yells at you for not doing anything right) and sometimes very soft (like you have to be when you go to the library) and they hope that maybe you can listen to it sometimes.

Which was pretty well the main reason that Kristy chose them, I think...
We had an unusual start, with the lead singer doing a mashup of Bob Dylan and Thom Yorke to get us going, and thereafter it was "spot the influence" for each song (with Dylan and Radiohead prominent, but The Beatles, Kings of Leon, blues masters of the past, all got their run!). The tracks we recognised were entertaining, but *significantly* better mixed on the radio versions - when played live the screaming from the lead singer was unfortunately fairly unintelligible.
The drummer was seriously solid, and entertaining. I wouldn't want to have been the kit, because it was getting a pounding - but it was a good spectacle.
The whole thing was actually 'quirkily interesting', but Kristy had had enough by around half way through the set and we bailed. Probably the right call for the night, but may be worth a re-visit.
Will be interesting to see if we can get any starters for another shot at the dudes...
Updated: actually, having seen this video (part 1, from their website), it kinda makes me think we should have given them the benefit of the doubt - that quirkiness is clear:
