h/t to Andrew, for passing on an excellent Waleed Aly article in the Age, articulating a point I have been struggling to find the words for recently:

it's not that the electorate is simply supporting a media beat up which seeks to change leaders as a matter of fashion.
the 'problem' here is that the electorate is listening and assessing the policies being implemented.
and it doesn't like them...
but, even when the electorate doesn't like some of the policies being implemented, that needn't be the end of them: we can deal with a lot of stuff we don't like if delivered coherently and with an honest articulation of the underpinning long term vision (without resorting to simplistic three word slogans like "fix the debt").
if the medical system is broken, tell us how and why. tell us where the burden should fall to fix it and why. explain why that burden has to disproportionately fall on the disadvantaged and infirm, if that's where it has to be (or, recognise while seeking to articulate the vision, that there is no reasonable explanation for the simple fix being attempted, and move to a more profound fix)
it's when policies are arbitrary or broken or simply ideological - with no clear explanation or proper justification - that we're over them!
