Refugees / human beings in desperate need

My email to my local member (Joe Hockey) below... fairly self explanatory.

GetUp's page on the topic is here:

Please...  consider the reality of what we are doing to some of the most vulnerable people in the world, and then act!

Mr Hockey --

We have *not* lost control of our borders.

We *do* have a problem with some desperate folk who believe they have no choice but to risk their lives and travel to Australia by boat to seek refuge.

We need to address that problem, but it's not the end of the world, and we are obliged to treat our fellow human beings with compassion and respect as we do so.

This is not a threat to the sovereignty of our country, and we will not suffer unduly even if we choose to be entirely compassionate in the face of the current challenges.

Yes, many Australians are concerned about the situation, perhaps largely because it has been beaten up into such a huge story and fears of refugees played up by politicians on both sides.

Now is *not* the time for abandoning the rule of law, the possbility of appeal, the obligations we owe under various conventions to those appealing for our assistance.

Now is the time to show leadership.

To share with our fellow Australians the real issues here. To explain how we can balance our human obligations, with plans to reduce the risk of people choosing to get on leaky boats and possibly lose their lives.

Please, please... help be part of the solution, and stop this sordid dog whistling. I would be willing (despite my idealogical differences) to stand alongside your supporters in walking your electorate to explain a leadership position if that would help in any way...
