Tommy Dean comedy night - Roxbury Hotel, Glebe - 4 August 2007

A very funny night indeed, but not real happy with the venue...

We (Sue, Teresa, Sam, Jonathon, Stephe) arrived and had dinner at the Roxbury, which was in a section of the bar that seemed almost decent, but didn't quite pull off any atmosphere. Food was fine for a pub, and then we went upstairs to the comedy room.

A bit of an initial challenge getting through the door (Sue was still finishing her dinner, and - despite the fact that the nice lady on the door had just finished a conversation with her about sending us up - we were hassled about not having Sue's card, and wanting to break into the venue early etc!).

The room was pretty small, with folding chairs set out in a tight pattern - looking pretty daggy I reckon. Was cramped, uncomfortable and no convenient bar...

But, the MC for the night (Justin? Lodge) was great - no question that he was a bit weird, but very funny. The first couple of acts were ok, a bit weak in places, but still managed to get us laughing. Justin was great between acts, and kept us pretty lively - with some time out to go and top up on drinks etc.

Tommy Dean was a hoot - and there was naff all cross over with the gig I saw him at not too many weeks before - he's clearly got a lot of material! Some of his best bits were digressions off the beaten path - it would be interesting to see just how many deviations he could make before getting completely lost.

Two amusing bits for the night as a bonus were (a) Macquarie Man (some wombat that was asked what he did for a living and said "I work for Macquarie", and was appropriately caned for the rest of the night as a result!; and (b) a girl who - in response to a quick request for audience feedback - told us all about working for an advertising agency selling Coke Zero, and then just wouldn't stop...
